Prescriber's Letter

So, I haven't posted in a few days. I have been waiting on my tech savvy husband to figure this whole "blog" thing for me and make sure that I have done it correctly. He is so great at things like that.

NP News
I was going through the mail today and ran across "Prescriber's Letter." It is a paid subscription. They give you little tid-bits of information, regarding new meds, myths/rumors, and overall health care. I love it, because my ADHD self cannot sit down and just read through a whole paper or magazine. It takes me forever, because I am so easily distracted. So, this just puts the important information and cuts out all of the extra info. It also covers all areas of practice. For example this months issue, discussed 2 new weight loss meds, fish oil tablets, birth control pills and their risks with DVT, the new medication for HIV prevention, and medications that interact with Warfarin. It also provides CMEs, patient handouts, and other helpful guides for the health care provider. What else can I say, it is wonderful. I recommend it to everyone.

This month, I was able to attend the AARP Pharmacology Update in Montgomery, Alabama. I went to the class 2 years ago and it was held in a small, medium size classroom. This year, there was such a great turnout! It was held in a large auditorium and I felt that most of the information I could use in my everyday practice. I was so happy to also sit next to several of my former colleagues. (Bentley, Jo, and BJ)

Next month, I will be attending a Cardiovascular specific conference. I will also obtain CEUs for this as well. It will be held in Birmingham near the Summit. OH NO, look out Shopping!! I am looking forward to the classes being cardio specific, something, I feel that I know a thing or two about.

In other news, when prescribing Brilinta 90 mg BID, make sure that you only provide the patient with ASA < or equal to 81 mg daily. Nothing more. It increases risk of bleeding. See PDR Drug Alerts.

What's for Dinner? Week of August 19-25, 2012

Since my Husband and I have moved in with my Father, I have been making weekly dinner menus. I will post this weeks dinner menu ideas and post recipes upon request. I usually try to have 6 meal ideas per week. We only go out to dinner 1-2 times per week. My Dad and Husband usually take left-overs.

Meal One: Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya
I am cooking this, because I found a great mix at EarthFare that I want to try out. In addition, I have some chicken and sausage in the freezer that I would like to use. It is only a couple of weeks old, but I do not like keeping things in the freezer for too long. Also, I like cooking items that I have most of the ingredients for, on hand. That is most important for me. Since we have moved to Mississippi, we have been disappointed in the lack of organic choices and good meat and cheese selections.

Meal Two:   Beef Stew with a Twist
Chris and I are always buying new cookbooks. We recently went to Williams and Sonoma and bought a few of Jamie Oliver's books that were on sale. I have been leafing through for recipe ideas. I was planning on making my Mom's Beef Stew, however, I saw that Jamie adds dumplings for a twist and that sounds amazing! I have marked that in my book. I have all of the ingredients for the stew on hand. I bought stew meat a couple of weeks ago.

I want to take this moment to tell you how I usually decide on the meals each week. I try to determine the meat, first. If I am going to make chicken twice in the week, I will make it on Monday and Friday or Saturday. If I use the same meat, I try to use it in a soup or stew and then as the main ingredient with 2 sides. Again, I always try to find meals that do not break the bank. I want to eat what I have at home. I then keep a small list handy to write when my pantry or refrigerator items are running low. It makes things so much easier. If I see meat on sale, that may change my menu for the week. No problem. I will just choose a meal that I want to eat the following week. In fact, Chris and I did that this week. We went to EarthFare while we were in Montgomery. He had been talking about eating Brisket. I have never cooked it. While there, we picked up a brisket and that was not on our list. We just compromised and pushed the Beef Stew to this week. No worries.

Meal Three: Bison Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries
Chris will totally be in charge of this meal. =) He wanted to pick up some Bison while at EarthFare, and I am "game" for anything. We will probably eat this on Friday or Saturday night. That way he will not have to cook after work.

Now I want to talk about desserts. YUMMY. I am not great at them. Terrible I know, since that was my Mom's specialty You will see, over time, I will add pictures of several cakes that she and I made over the past few years. During the week, I do try to make 2 desserts. This week I made rice krispie's and I will make a cherry crumble this evening. I like super easy desserts that you can add your own twist too. That is why I like to cook and do not prefer desserts. With most desserts, you have to be exact with each measurement etc.

Meal Four: Spinach Manicotti with Ground Turkey Meat Sauce
Another "thank you" to the wonderful EarthFare. The store that we love. They had this is in their refrigerator section. Pre-made Manicotti. It should be easy to make some meat sauce, with ground turkey of course, and a couple of vegetables on the side.

Meal Five: Lentil, Spinach and Bacon Stew
I cooked lentils about 2 weeks ago. They were amazing. Green lentils. There are several different colors. I did not add any special ingredients, just lentils. Of course, we had a crusty french bread to soak up the juice. YUM, my mouth is watering. When we were in Mobile, shopping with my Bestie Susannah, I found some red, Spanish lentils. I have been wanting to try them. Williams and Sonoma have a new book out entitled One Pot of The Day, 365 recipes for every day of the year. They have a recipe on page 281, that will become useful next week.

Well, I better get started on dinner this evening. Taco Soup, which is the easiest dinner ever. Should only take about 30 minutes. Talk soon. xoxo Cindi Sunshine

House Cleaning, Starting Early

Since I am not currently working, I have found myself in a weekly regimen. So, for each post, I want to start with what I have done during the week. Monday is my house cleaning day. Since we were still in Montgomery, I did not do this until late Monday evening and part of Tuesday. I also usually do laundry at the end of the week, Thursday or Friday. I started it yesterday.

Oh, I can SO talk about house cleaning, (and I didn't think that I had anything to talk about). House cleaning is something that I have always enjoyed to do. Crazy, right? Well, there are certain parts that I prefer, such as the vacuuming and general cleaning. So, my usual regimen, each week, includes dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning each room. I will of course, clean the toilets, clean out the refrigerator, and wash the linens. That includes the blankets on the couches.

How to keep a clean house and work? Well, I have done this. Whether you are better in the a.m. or the p.m., you need to take 15-30 minutes each day and pick up around the house. I always woke up a little early to pick up from the evening before. Especially if I had a long, hard day at work.

I love Clorox Wipes. They are the best for keeping germs aways, their ease of use, and they smell nice too. I use them to wipe baseboards, toilets, tubs, sinks, and counters. As much as I can get away with.

As far as the yard, Chris, my husband, always does the yard once a week. He takes out the garbage and helps with the laundry. I do not mind washing the clothes, but Chris is totally Type A about folding. So, he takes that on, usually. It is always nice to have a helping hand.

I laugh sometimes when I think about cleaning. I started early, as it was also important to my Mother. In fact, I started doing my own laundry at 12! I even remember going over to my Aunt Debbie's house and she used to play a "cleaning game". I think it is great for small children. She would see which child could pick up the most items in the rooms and put them where they needed to go in 15 minutes. So, she would bring Beth, Jo, and I in the room and she would direct us where the items needed to go. We would even pick up paper off the floor! That way, all she had to do was vacuum, dust and mop. It made it easy and it gave us a sense of responsibility.

You can only play the game if you are excited and motivated. You have to be very vocal during the process and keep the children moving. I have picked at her over the years about this "game," as she used to call it.

Initial Post

My very first post. I can't believe that I have finally started a blog. I actually do not have anything to vent about today. Just a "hello" to the Internet world. I am still trying to figure this whole "BLOG" thing out. I am not very computer and Internet savvy. It has not been easy for me. Hopefully with time and practice, I will figure it out. I hope that you enjoy reading my posts and learn a little something along the way.
